Why should I see a perinatal specific psychologist?Pregnancy, childbirth and the adjustment to parenthood can have a significant impact on mental health that can be exacerbated by lack of sleep, pre-existing mental health issues and changes to other relationships. Perinatally trained psychologists integrate knowledge of maternal mental health, infant mental health, developmental psychology, family dynamics and systemic issues to assess and treat a wide-range of mental health needs for women both during pregnancy and after birth. My services include supporting women in the conception phase, pregnancy, and post-partum up until your youngest child is 3 years old.

Are telehealth sessions as effective as face to face sessions? If anything good came out of the pandemic, it was research that showed telehealth is effective both in terms of clinical effectiveness (e.g. symptom reduction, increase in quality of life) and also in terms of client satisfaction and capacity for establishing a good therapy relationship. Additionally, often finding time (or babysitters) to get to a face to face session can become a barrier for accessing mental health support. No Mummy should have to make a choice between her mental wellbeing and everyday demands.

What can I expect from my sessions? You will be sent an email link to join a confidential video call. In your first session, we will discuss what led you to see a psychologist, and what might be contributing to your current situation. Together, we will establish a treatment plan and goals that you would like to move towards over subsequent sessions. This might be symptom reduction and/or growing your skillset to cope with any challenges you are facing. Before your first session, I will send you some brief questionnaires to complete for me to have a thorough picture of your mental health symptoms. These may be repeated after a few sessions for us to evaluate how you are feeling over time. Each session is 50 minutes long. Please make sure you log in on time for us to make the most of our time together.

How many sessions will I need? The number of sessions for each individual will vary and depend on your needs and goals, and placing a time limit on strengthening our mental health may do us a disservice. Often, many of the things that have led to us experiencing challenges has developed over time, so naturally expecting it to resolve in 1 or 2 sessions can be setting unrealistic expectations. Regardless, I will always work with you and within parameters you feel comfortable with!

How much are sessions and how do I pay?A standard 50 minute appointment is $240. Clients with a Mental Health Care Plan referral from a GP or Psychiatrist are eligible for a Medicare rebate under the Better Access to Mental Health Care Scheme. The current rebate is $93.35, however the referral must be in place prior to the first claimable session. Following a review with the referring doctor after six sessions, a further four sessions can be granted. During your session, payment will be automatically processed using the credit card details provided in your client intake form. Your card details are stored and tokenised by our software partner's gateway, meaning that once initially entered and captured, they are not visible to the psychologist or by the software company. If you have concerns or would like more information, please don't hesitate to ask!

Is there a cancellation policy? It is totally understandable that you may need to reschedule your appointment - life happens! If I am notified with more than 48 hours notice to allow me to give the appointment to someone else, no cancellation fee will apply. Unfortunately, if the appointment needs to be cancelled with less than 48 hours notice, a cancellation fee of 50% of the standard fee will apply.
